No sign language for Kinect?

I had put up a blog post previously stating that Microsoft Kinect will be able to understand sign language, and even read lips. This is not the cause. Microsoft has filed a patent for a application with the ability to do this, but it will not be ready by the time Kinect ships out. Also has been stated that the cost would be too high.
